Is Your Posture Balanced? What The 'Bilateral Weight Scales Test' Can Reveal About Your Alignment!

Published April 2nd, 2025 by Dr. Sam Camarata

When it comes to posture, pain, and performance, the body doesn’t lie. One of the simplest yet most powerful tools we use at Camarata Chiropractic to assess your alignment is the bilateral weight scale test. This quick test reveals how well your body is balanced—and whether your posture may be contributing to pain, poor movement, or even risk of injury.

What Are Bilateral Weight Scales?

Bilateral weight scales are two separate scales placed side by side—one for each foot. When a person stands on them evenly, the weight distribution should be close to equal between the left and right sides. This test gives us an immediate picture of how your body is loading weight, which reflects the alignment of your spine, pelvis, hips, knees, and feet.

If one side is heavier than the other, even by a few pounds, that means your body is compensating due to misalignment. Over time, this uneven weight distribution can create muscle imbalances, joint strain, and nerve tension that affect the way you feel and function.

What Causes Uneven Weight Distribution?

Several factors can throw your posture and alignment off balance:

  • Pelvic misalignment or rotation

  • Spinal subluxations

  • Structural or functional leg length discrepancies

  • Muscle tightness or weakness in the hips, back, or legs

  • Poor foot biomechanics or collapsed arches

  • Prolonged poor posture from sitting, technology use, or one-sided activities

When your posture is out of balance, your brain-body connection becomes skewed. The result is altered proprioception—your body’s awareness of position, movement, and balance in space.

Why Proprioception Matters

Proprioception is a vital part of your nervous system. It allows your brain to understand where your limbs are and how they’re moving without you consciously thinking about it. When your posture is imbalanced, this feedback loop becomes disrupted.

That means:

  • Your brain isn’t getting accurate information from your body

  • Your muscles may fire out of sequence

  • You may compensate without realizing it

  • You’re at greater risk for pain, stiffness, and injury

This imbalance doesn’t just affect the way you stand—it impacts how you move, recover, and perform in daily life.

How Chiropractic Adjustments Help Rebalance Your Body

At Camarata Chiropractic & Wellness, we use chiropractic adjustments to:

  • Restore alignment in the spine and pelvis

  • Improve communication between the nervous system and body

  • Re-establish proper weight distribution and balance

  • Improve brain-body connection

  • Enhance postural stability and proprioception

When we adjust your spine and extremities, it sends important signals through your nervous system to the brain. This stimulates a feedback loop we call the "safety pin cycle"—where clear signals flow up from the body to the brain and back down to coordinate function, posture, and movement.

The Benefits of Getting Adjusted and Rebalancing Posture

  • Reduced muscle tension and joint strain

  • Improved posture and alignment

  • Decreased risk of injury from imbalance

  • Better proprioception and body awareness

  • Increased energy and movement efficiency

  • Relief from pain in the back, hips, knees, feet, and more
