Cultivating Fertility

Published September 4th, 2018 by Dr. Sam Camarata

Just under 15% of couples struggle with fertility -- however, there is hope.

For many, the ability to have children and extend a family is extremely important. While there are other options out there for growing a family, rather than conceiving naturally (such as in vitro fertilization – IVF, intrauterine insemination – IUI, artificial insemination, etc.), it can still be hard for a family to learn that they are infertile. Infertility impacts families worldwide; it is estimated that 13.2-15.4% of the population is infertile. In America alone, infertility plagues over 7 million couples aged between 15-44 years.

Infertility is defined as the inability to conceive after one year (12 months) of actively trying to get pregnant. There are various factors that are linked to infertility such as sperm disorders (which affect 35% of couples), decreased ovarian reserve or ovulation dysfunction (affects 20% of couples), tubal dysfunction and pelvic lesions (affects 30% of couples), abnormal cervical mucus (less than 5% of couples affected), and another 10% of couples are affected by unidentified factors. These factors can include issues with hormones, altered pituitary or follicular dysfunction, altered uterine or spiral artery blood flow, immunological factors, and altered endometrial function. While many factors decrease a family’s ability to conceive, there are also factors that can help increase the chances of conceiving!

While a google search may come up with various options and home remedies for increasing fertility, recent medical research has demonstrated that chiropractic care can help women who are unable to conceive.  In a recently published case study, a 32-year old female with a history of infertility was managed under chiropractic care. Over the course of a 6-week period, the patient was adjusted 12 times at a pace of twice per week. It was found that through the reduction of the patient’s subluxations, the patient’s chances of fertility increased and the patient was finally able to conceive naturally! Removing subluxation offers patients an optimal opportunity for the healing and overall function of the body – including fertility!
